Here are five straight forward tips for ensuring your cakes turn out as exciting and delicious as they can be.
- Follow the recipe- this sounds so obvious but so often people guess or approximate measurements. Baking is a chemical process with chemical reactions. Tried and tested recipes contain the correct ratio of ingredients. Varying from them could lead to disaster.
- Heat your oven- make sure your oven is pre-heated to the correct temperature before you try to bake. Do not place your cake in the oven and then heat it up from cold.
- Raising agents- pay careful attention as to whether you need baking soda, baking powder, or air to create that fluffy texture. Using the wrong one or not mixing correctly to add the air may result in flat and failed cakes.
- Fresh ingredients- stale flour, old milk and clumpy sugar will do nothing for the end product. Select the most fresh, and the best quality ingredients you can get your hands on.
- Mixing- liquid ingredients often need separate mixing from the dry ones. Don’t think you can save time by doing it all at once! Careful not to over mix the dry with the wet, or beat too fast.
